International students get their higher education at universities, academies and institutes that are not only accredited, but also have a special license to teach foreign students. International students start their studying with foundation year. 

It includes a course of the Ukrainian (Russian) language and some of the comprehensive subjects by the future profession. Further education is continuing together with Ukrainian students. English medium is also available.

As a foreign student you will discover the region full of surprising contrasts. You will quickly become part of it, especially during many festivals and the intense (diverse) cultural life, the region is famous for. 

Higher education within the Ukrainian community has always been open to foreign students. Its student body comprised of men and women from all over the world has the invaluable experience of studying together with students of many different natural and cultural backgrounds. The contact with students from all over the world broadens understanding of other peoples and provides valuable friendship, some of which lasts a lifetime. 

Having more than 1 million students, higher educational establishments of Ukraine form the system which considers to be one of the biggest in the world. In Ukraine you can get higher education at universities (academies, institutes) of the 3-4th accreditation level.  You will get Bachelor’s degree after 4 years of studying, specialist’ s degree – after 5 years  and Master’s Degree – after five and a half or 6 years. Among all the enumerated degrees Specialist is the most popular. 

You are admitted to the university by the results of the entrance exams in July-August. The academic year beginning on the 1st of September lasts up to the end of July (ends in July) and consists of two terms. All students go on holidays between two terms: the first term (September - January) and the second one (February - June). Summer holidays last for two months. At the end of each term the student takes 3 or 5 examinations and 3 or 5 tests (credits). Successful pass of examinations and tests guarantees the possibility of getting to the second term. Students have classes everyday but for (except for) weekends. They attend lectures, tutorials, work with materials in libraries and resource centers.

Higher education course includes work placement, where students have the possibility to gain work experience. Recognition of the gained qualification is the priority of the state. In case of successful university graduation students get the Diploma no matter what form of property it refers to. The transcript of the subject list with marks is attached to the Diploma. Although the state guarantees the conformity (correspondence of) with qualification standards, the employer takes into consideration how authoritative the university is.

Higher educational institutions of Ukraine welcome everybody who wants to study in our country and give an opportunity to get education of the international level. In the years of independence the network (system) of higher educational institutions has structurally changed. Now it varies in the types of educational institutions, forms of ownership and subordination, and is similar to the structure adopted in the world developed countries. Educational system includes state and private educational institutions.

At the moment, 920 variously owned higher educational institutions of all accreditation levels work (provide education services) in Ukraine and guarantee qualitative training by more than 500 specialties.

101 universities and academies have been awarded the status of national ones.

EDUCATION SYSTEM IN UKRAINE ::::::::::::::::::

The educational system of Ukraine is represented with the numerous educational establishments which for decades train leading specialists in different fields of industry. Ukrainian educational establishments are known not only within country but also abroad.

Many of them are not only educational but also research and cultural centers. At present the development of education is one of the country´s priorities. Methods, developments and projects of worldwide known scientists, are actively introduced into educational process.

Students successfully get both theoretical and practical knowledges. Long-term experience along with achievements of modern science and technique, help Ukrainian educational establishments to educate the real professionals which in future will bring prestige to their country. The universities of Ukraine give a possibility both to foreign citizens, and for citizens of Ukraine, to get higher education in one of specialities of University with the day-time or extra-mural form of studies.

Preparation of specialists is carried out in three educational directions: Bachelor, Specialist and Master (you may find additional information about the University specialities, in other sections of this site). Education terms (in brackets for extra-mural form of education): Bachelor - 4 (5), Specialist - 5 years (6), Master - 5.5 (6.5). Graduates get the state standard University diploma. University rendered the assistance in international legalization of diplomas through the Ministry of education and science of Ukraine.

Study of foreign citizens in educational establishments requires payment. Instruction of foreigners is carried out in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On legal status of foreigners and persons without citizenship”, decisions of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 26.02.93 # 136 “About the study of foreign citizens in Ukraine” (with changes) and of 05.08.98 # 1238 “About the approval of the Statute as for the enrollment of foreigners and persons without citizenship to studies in higher educational establishments.”

Foreigners, who get state grants on international agreements, national programs, other international obligations of Ukraine, are enrolled for studies on the basis of directions of the Ministry of education and science of Ukraine according to the governmental state order quotas. While enrolled to the other majoring directions (specialities) the foreigners of Ukrainian origin, who were sent for studies from the officially registered Ukrainian national and cultural societies, enjoy the same rights, as the citizens of Ukraine.

If they previously participated in the international olympiads on general program subjects, the entrance examinations are defined by University as the profile one for entering to the chosen by the applicants faculty preparation (speciality).

All the applicants of foreign origin can study only on the contract basis.

The advantage of Ukrainian education lies in achievements of long-term practice.

It is important to note that the introduction of English language as a study language is relatively recent, and started off in the most popular courses amongst foreign students, such as medicine and computer engineering. Although most universities are gradually introducing the use of English language as a study language and spreading to other courses, chances are also high that some courses are not available for study in English language.
